Research/Teaching
RESEARCH My MD thesis was an epidemiological twenty-year follow-up study of the Whickham survey which involved determining the outcome in terms of thyroid disorders, diabetes and cardiovascular disease in 2779 subjects. This has provided unique incidence data and risk factors for these disorders. My MD thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham in 1995 was titled "The Incidence of Thyroid Disorders and Diabetes Mellitus in the Community and the Relationship of Thyroid Failure with the Development of Ischaemic Heart Disease". Subsequently my main research interests have been in the field of epidemiology, clinical thyroid disease, audit and the cost-effectiveness of managing thyroid disease. AUDIT I have supervised or participated in the following audits: 1. Development of protocol for the management of thyroid cancer (Vanderpump MPJ, Alexander L, Scarpello JH & Clayton RN. An audit of the management of thyroid cancer in a district general hospital. British Endocrine Societies 1996, Journal of Endocrinology Suppl to Vol 148 P-198). http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/119120411/abstract 2. Audit of strategy of use of TSH alone in thyroid function tests in a DGH laboratory. (Vanderpump MPJ, Manning K, Neary RH & Clayton RN (1996). The third generation thyrotrophin (TSH) assay is not cost-effective in testing for thyroid disease in the community. British Endocrine Societies 1996, Journal of Endocrinology Suppl to Vol 148:OC-19 and Proceedings of 10th International Congress of Endocrinology). http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=9488012 3. Analysis of patient knowledge and effectiveness of insulin stress tests performed in patients with pituitary disease within the Department of Endocrinology of the Royal Free Hospital. (Brothwood TA & Vanderpump MP. Safety, accuracy and patients' perspectives of insulin tolerance tests: An audit. Endocrine Society 2001, Endo 2001:P1-627). 4. Audit of use of continuous glucose sensor in insulinomas (Baldeweg SE, Hope S, Tibbals J, Davidson B & Vanderpump M. Use of continuous glucose monitoring system in the medical management of insulinomas. Society for Endocrinology joint with Diabetes UK 2003, Endocrine Abstracts 6:P39/ DP23). http://www.endocrine-abstracts.org/ea/0006/ea0006dp23.htm 5. An audit of patients treated surgically for acromegaly at the National Hospital, Queen Square, demonstrated that transsphenoidal surgery was effective first-line therapy for acromegaly and that less than 50% of patients require adjuvant therapy to provide a cure. (Baldeweg SE, Conway GS, Powell M & Vanderpump M. Single centre audit of surgical outcome in acromegaly. British Endocrine Societies 2003, Endocrine Abstracts 5:P190). http://www.endocrine-abstracts.org/ea/0005/ea0005p190.htm 6. An audit of hypoglycaemia in insulin treated patients with type 2 diabetes. (Hope SJC, Parker C, Vanderpump MPJ. Hypoglycaemia and insulin treated type 2 diabetes - two insulin regimes compared. Diabetes UK 2004, Diabetes Medicine 21 (Suppl 2):P102). 7. An audit of patients with thyrotoxicosis treated at the Royal Free Hospital has provided data on the relapse rate following treatment with anti-thyroid drugs, radioiodine and surgery as well as providing cost-effectiveness data for the three management approaches. (Patel NN, Baker JJ, Abraham P & Vanderpump MPJ. The cost-effectiveness of treatment modalities for thyrotoxicosis - a 2-year follow-up study. American Thyroid Association 2004, Thyroid: 14:700). http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16839261?ordinalpos=8&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum 8. Audit and review of the new night-team structure in acute medicine to examine quality of care, training opportunities, leadership and team-building and consultant work-load in conjunction with the Medical Director and Postgraduate Dean. http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/rcop/cm/2004/00000004/00000005/art00012 9. A prospective study using continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) for type 1 diabetes at the Royal Free Hospital. (Solomon AM, Nethaji C, Holland J, Vanderpump M & Press M. A prospective study using continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) for type 1 diabetes in a single centre. Diabetes UK 2008, Diabetes Medicine 25, Suppl 1:OC) 10. Joint audit with the Departments of Clinical Biochemistry and Hepatology to determine the incidence of thyroid dysfunction in a Hepatitis C population treated with Interferon and Ribavirin combination therapy (Costelloe S, Wassef N, Morris C, Schulz J, Vaghani T, Thomas M, Jacobs M, Dusheiko G, Vanderpump M. Thyroid dysfunction in a hepatitis C population treated with interferon therapy.
